Baptism marks the beginning of a new
life in Christ. The water of Baptism is a sacramental sign of our
participation in Christ’s death and of our own death to sin. Baptism
is also a sign of our participation in the Resurrection of Christ
and our rebirth to new life in Christ. Through Baptism we are united
to Christ and become members of the Church, the Body of Christ. The
effects of this initiation into the life of Christ include the
following: (a) original sin and any personal sins committed prior to
Baptism (for adults) are forgiven; (b) our new life in Christ
establishes us as adopted children of the Father; (c) as members of
Christ we become temples of the Holy Spirit; (d) we become sharers
in the priesthood of Christ; and (e) we are freed from the slavery
of sin and given access to true freedom in Christ.
At. Baptism, the Priest or Deacon
prays, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit” [Rite of Baptism]. Water is poured over the head
of the baby or (person) being baptized.
